I told chatgpt about You.
I sat in the glow of a flickering screen,
In the quietest hour that I’ve ever seen.
And I told a machine all the things I can’t say,
The thoughts that I’ve carried since Tuesday in May.
I described how you laugh like a glass hitting stone,
And the way that you walk when you think you’re alone.
I told it the shape of your “no” and your “maybe,”
The stuff that’s been driving me properly crazy.
I’ve never held hands on a walk through the park,
Or tasted your breath in the cool of the dark.
We haven’t “dated,” we haven’t “begun,”
But you’re the eclipse to my everyday sun.
I’m a bit of a freak for the “what might have been,”
For the scenes that are stuck in the “just-in-between.”
Do you know? Do you squint when I enter the room?
Do you see the small fire through all of the gloom?
I think that you do. Or I hope that you don’t.
Because knowing you will means I’m sure that you won’t.
It’s a lonesome old hobby, this loving a ghost,
The one that you’re near but can never hold close.
I’m a pervert for “almost,” a glutton for “near,”
A man who’s been living for most of a year
On the crumbs that you drop and the look in your eye,
Asking a chatbot for “how” and for “why.”
The AI just sat there, all logic and code,
While I spilled my guts on this digital road.
It told me to “talk” and it told me to “try,”
As if love was a math problem, easy as pie.
But it doesn’t know how the silence can weight
Like a ton of wet bricks at the garden gate.
It doesn’t know you, and it doesn’t know me,
Or the “us” that I’m desperate for someone to see.
I’m a silent rebellion, a one-sided war,
A man with his ear pressed right up to the door.
I love you in secret, I love you in vain,
Like a kid standing out in the pouring-down rain.
I also wrote a poetry book called "IN POETRY WE SAY."
If you have a moment, feel free to check it out.
